NearLondon’s iconicTowerBridgeand City Hall stand 15 bodacious, full-figured Chinese women—and they’re not tourists or businesswomen. After jaunts inAustralia,Italy, andFrance, these sculptures arrived on June 3 as part of “Chubby Women,” a two-week outdoor exhibit by Chinese sculptor Xu Hongfei.
Though there’s been some discussion of whether there’s a political meaning behind the sculptures, they are so joyful and full of life that it’s hard to focus on anything else but the fun of it. One rides a bike, another kisses a man, and a third plays with a child. Each exudes incredible grace.
“We have large women, too," Hongfei says. “And big can be beautiful.”
Here’s to hoping the exhibit proves the maxim that life does indeed imitate art.
